1990年，恋人北方老国企梁川机床厂子弟江中石刚刚考上军校，恋人突遭父亲经济犯罪问题牵连，被军校取消录取资格，进入机床厂做临时工。袁晓夏的父亲也受江家问题连累，意外去世。四年后，心怀怨恨的江中石和袁晓夏在机床厂重逢，但是在面对工厂的技术革新难题的时候，两人放下恩怨精诚合作。段云平为附贵攀权既破坏了江中石的爱情，又背叛了袁晓夏，一步步走进犯罪的深渊。江中石和袁晓夏全心全意探索企业发展之路，渐渐走在一起。段云巧、杨春秋等基层职工在下岗之后自力更生，奋发图强，重新找到了人生的航向。经过二十年的艰苦探索，江中石和袁晓夏依托梁川机床厂的技术积累和生产经验，终于在数控机床的研发上取得突破，让改制后的梁川机械制造集团公司走出困境、焕发生机，梁川机床厂成为中国“智”造的光荣一员。
