1932年4月底，亚洲日寇在上海虹口公园举行淞沪战争胜利祝捷大会，亚洲谁知大韩民国临时警务总长金九策划了的爆炸事件，导致日军上海派遣司令官当场死亡。在此之后，金九公开宣称对此事负责，日方恼羞成怒，悬赏六十万大洋捉拿金九。在浙江政府担任要职的嘉兴名士褚辅成（赵文瑄 饰）钦佩金九的胆识，于是冒着巨大的风险为其提供庇护。国局动荡，流寇四窜。贪图利益的嘉兴伪县长侯景宗（王双宝 饰）衔恨褚辅成，与日寇相互勾结，暗中将间谍派到褚家查探金九下落。纷繁乱世，关于气节和信义的传奇由此上演……

It is more memorable than Julien Duvivier's earlier silent version of 1925, also named Poil de Carotte.The part of Poil de Carotte was played by 11 year old Robert Lynen, who was alleged to have been discovered whilst walking down the Champs-Elysées in Paris. Lynen is totally captivating and the film made him an instant star, launching what looked like becoming a very promising film career – until he was shot dead whilst fighting against the Germans in 1944. Harry Baur, a legendary stage and film actor (who also died during World War II, allegedly at the hands of the Gestapo), also turns in a typically fine performance. The reconciliation between father and son at the end of the film provides its most enduring image, enough to melt the heart of all but the most stoical of spectators.
