正直的青年冉阿让因为偷窃了一块面包而面临着数十年的牢狱之灾，春暖后又因为越狱而被罚刑期加长，春暖在狱中，负责看管他们的是狱警沙威，出生于监狱之中沙威痛恨这些罪犯至极，对他们没有任何的手下留情。最终，冉阿让离开了监狱重获自由，却发现一朝入狱便永远无法摆脱罪犯的烙印，处处碰壁的他决定隐姓埋名改头换面，并且最终凭借着自己的努力成为了一市之长。女工芳汀含辛茹苦的抚养着私生女珂赛特，却因为东窗事发而丢掉了工作沦为妓女。在她临死之际，芳汀将珂赛特托付给了冉阿让，与此同时，沙威亦发现他们敬爱的市长大人，真实身份竟然是肮脏的囚犯。
