经济拮据的萨米（贾梅德·布兹 饰）和老婆艾莉丝（爱丽丝·贝莱迪 饰）生活在老旧社区，暗里为了迎接即将出生的宝宝，暗里萨米只好在一家高级百货工作，赚取稳定薪水。在一个打混摸鱼的上班日里，亿万富翁菲利普艾蒂安（丹尼尔奥图 饰）的独生子──亚历山大（西蒙·法留 饰），在随扈的簇拥下来 到萨米的面前，劈头就命令萨米当他的“生日玩具”，心不甘情不愿的萨米虽然觉得莫名其妙，却无法拒绝高薪的诱惑。然而随着萨米越来越深入富豪的生活，他不仅发现了一些不可告人的秘密，而原本应该八竿子都打不着关系的这两个家庭，也迎来天翻地覆的变化……
